Makena is another one of Maui's place's that has pristine beaches.
Big Beach, also popularly known as Makena Beach, and officially called
Oneloa Beach, is one of Hawaii's finest beaches. This is the
beach that everyone pictures in their head when they think " Maui
." Even at two thirds of a mile long and 100 feet wide, with
transparent waters and not a structure in sight, the place is
surprisingly popular, considering how out of the way it is. The waters
are calm here, making a real swimming beach that is ideal for a day out
with the whole family. This shoreline is very gently sloping and is a
visual feast - with thick soft sand, palm trees and the beautiful Maui
Prince Hotel rising out of the background. Makena beach offers
restrooms, picnic areas and showers on site. Makena is the last
pristine coastal stretch in this part of Maui that hasn't yet succumbed
to development.
What makes this area different than the other's is "Little
Makena". Officially known as Maui's "unofficial
clothing-optional beach," Little Beach is an isolated strand
surrounded by high shrubs, craggy volcanic rocks and driftwood.
Although nude sunbathing is illegal in Hawaii, the law has not been
enforced here for years. As a result, Little Beach has become a
favorite hangout for naturists. Little beach can be accessed by
climbing over this rock in which the picture is taken from. If you are
brave enough to venture over onto Little Beach, make sure to bring extra
sun protection. Little Beach is also one of the best beach-access scuba
diving spots on Maui (depth: 45'/14m). Enter the water near the
right/far end of the beach and swim out. Currents are not a problem
unless, of course, seas are stormy. The underwater topography is varied
and rewarding.
