Lahaina is Maui's most touristy part of the island. Often called the
"jewel in the crown of Maui," Lahaina is a destination that
is experienced by two million people, or 83% of all Maui visitors,
annually. Once the whaling capital of the world and the former capital
of the Kingdom of Hawaii, Lahaina is now Maui's favorite commercial
district, though it still has the look and feel of the old days. The
historical town center is noted for its 110-year-old Banyan Tree, one
of the world's largest, which grows over a whole block just in front of
The Wharf Cinema Center. The Center, which boasts more than 50 shops
and restaurants, surrounds a comfortable courtyard decorated with
waterfalls and convenient, umbrella-shaded tables.
There always seem to
be a couple of cruise ships docked off the shore, flooding the streets
of Lahaina with the cruiser's. The original historic flavor has been
maintained through the efforts of the Lahaina Restoration Foundation,
while being kept contemporary by the Lahainatown Action Committee.
Lahaina's charm is found in the downtown area. The main street that
runs through the area is the famous Front Street, and it hosts some of
the town's and indeed the island's best night spots. Popular
establishments include Moose McGillycuddy's and Hard Rock Café. There
are plenty of curio shops, sophisticated jewelers, art galleries and
boutiques to accommodate the tourists thirst for souvenirs. There are
quite a few excursion and tour booth's around the area. These booth's
have plenty of activities to choose from, from luau's to whale watching
tours, and they can usually get you signed up and going in a few hours.
