Black Rock Beach in Kaanapali is one of the best beaches on Maui.
Six world class hotels and condos, each surrounded by acres of tropical
landscaping, beautiful pools and waterfalls, are built right on the
beach. The public has no problem accessing the beach. There is a
concrete path that runs the entire length of the beach from Black Rock
to the Hyatt. One of the best times to walk along this little path is
at sunset when the sky becomes an autumn colored wonder, illuminating
the resorts in a mirage of color. Dinner cruises line the waters and there is a
friendly relaxed atmosphere all around. Black Rock is a popular area
that divides the beach in half and is renowned for terrific snorkeling.
The water around this area of the island is particularly calm which
makes snorkeling a real treat, especially around the north most part of
Ka'anapali near Black Rock . The central part of the beach has a softer
sandier ocean floor making it quite popular with local body boarders.
The surf can gradually pick up though and at times like this swimming
is strongly discouraged.
It is called Black Rock Beach after the large black rock you can see
in this picture that jets out over the ocean. If you look closely, you
can see a person jumping off the rock into the ocean. This is a popular
event, as there can be a dozen people jumping off this rock doing
flips, twists, and turns before hitting the water. As you snorkel, you
could see them under water entering the water. Visibility here is
outstanding at around 100 feet. With such good visibility, you could
see plenty of sea life, along with some adventurous scuba diver's
swimming below.
