The Edge of the World Bed and Breakfast in Capatin Cook, Big Island of Hawaii

There are a few places in the world that seem to demand that you just let yourself go, unbend and soar with the wind. The Edge of the World is one of them.

Tickle the eyes, spark the imagination, remember what nature and being is all about. No matter where you have lived, after spending time at the Edge of the World, you'll feel you've returned to where you started.

As the name implies, this is the edge of the world. You can view down into Kealakekua Bay where James Cook met his demise in the late 1700's and easily imagine his awe of this island and the natives' awe of him and his ship. Five acres offers the quietude one should expect in such a beautiful setting. Tropical fruit trees are there for your picking, and macadamia nut trees and coffee plants are there for my picking, but you can help if you want to. There's also a tree house in the ever-being-built stage perched in a mango tree for the young and young at heart who really want to get away.

South Kona is known for its rural flavor. People who live here call it the real Hawaii - as opposed to the hustle and bustle of Waikiki or the resorts to the north. Be sure to let me know your special interests (whale watching, kayaking, volcano watching, scuba, etc.) so that I can help you build them into your stay on the Big Island.

The Edge of the World is a modern, comfortable and tranquil bed and breakfast with amazing views down the Kona Coast and out to the Pacific Ocean.

Great snorkeling and hiking near by. A great place to catch a sunset. Enjoy the hot tub, swim with dolphins, play golf, or just relax.

Your host, Dr. Kurt Weigelt, prepares an excellent breakfast: vegan, traditional, Japanese or Hawaiian.

Located on a macadamia nut and coffee farm, at your request you will be given a short tropical agriculture tour.  If you want to experience the real flavor of Big Island life, this is the place to go.  King size beds, private baths, telephones in room, and much more.

Facilities:

It's a ten minute drive to a modern, free public swimming pool and tennis courts, ten minutes to some of the world's greatest snorkeling, and twenty minutes to ancient archeological sites and ethnobotanical garden, or follow me around my orchard while I talk with the plants. Play badminton in the front yard. Free use of the washing machine, snorkeling equipment, coolers, and beach gear, and discount rates on the ocean kayak. Limited refrigerator space is available for guests. Free internet use to keep in touch with people at home. Satellite TV, and VCR are also available for guests.

Organic Coffee:

One of the most interesting and intriguing features about Edge of the World B&B is that we grow our very own organic coffee... which we must say, our guests absolutely enjoy! Our guests enjoy learning how our coffee is grown and of course our guests also enjoy our coffee's absolutely refreshing taste!

As our guest, we invite you to come and enjoy the many pleasures of Edge of the World B&B and of course, our coffee.

Our coffee is of the highest quality! In fact, our coffee is organically processed, meaning no chemicals are used during fermentation, and we don't use herbicides or pesticides in growing. It is also sun dried and for those that don't know, organic products have a noticeably more delicious taste or flavor and our organic coffee is no different!

Edge of the World coffee would be categorized as "estate coffee" as we don't buy from others to put under our label. Things you may have heard about "extra fancy" or "peaberry" being superior qualities are most likely hype. The density of the bean is an important factor, but most important is how it tastes to the person who drinks it.

We are careful to pick only fully ripened beans. We can ensure this by picking everything by hand.

We sell our coffee for $7 for half a pound, or $14 a pound. 2 pounds can be shipped to the mainland for $3.20, priority mail, and is there in two or three days.

For orders of 5 pounds or more, we charge $12 per pound. When kept whole bean in a ziploc bag in the freezer it has about a one year period where there is no noticeable decline in flavor or strength. Once it's ground, however, this drops to about one hour.

Ordering:

You can order our organically grown coffee by email or phone.

We are also happy to answer your questions about our very interesting coffee bean operation.

Directions

The Edge of the World is about 17 miles from Keohole (Kona) airport.

Turn right on Rte. 19, which becomes Rte. 11 after Kailua-Kona town.  You'll pass the Manago Hotel (between 109 and 110 mile markers) on your right as you enter the small town of Capt. Cook.  On your left you'll pass the fire station, post office, and Kealakekua Ranch Center.
Two streets past the Kona Theater, (the first street is Anoi Place) maybe half a mile, you will make a right turn.  At that intersection you will see a one foot by six foot wooden sign saying "McCoy Plantation." Turn right there and remain on that road for the next two tenths of a mile. Don't drive down Coffee Drive. Please drive slowly from here to the Edge, as roads are narrow and visibility poor.  After two tenths you will see a small blue newspaper tube on a post on the right hand side of the road. You'll also see a white circle about two feet in diameter painted on the road. Turn right there (it looks kind of like a driveway) and proceed down a narrow, lush road for two tenths of a mile.  You will pass two houses on your right, the second one with a fence running down the middle of the road, just keep going straight ahead, down a hill, up a hill and out of the lushness with coffee plants on your left and a small pasture on your right.  When the pasture (and a low stone wall) end, you will turn right down a cement driveway. You'll also see a six foot long white arrow painted in the road, and a small sign that says "Edge". It's a long driveway of about 400 feet.  Don't stop at the first house which has a large green roof, just keep going until you come to The Edge of the World, where you'll see a very small sign. You'll see a modern looking two story structure, upper floor is redwood with white roof, and the lower level is beige stucco, a white pick up truck parked at the entrance.

If you feel confused, just give me a call and I will be happy to meet you at the Manago Hotel or the Capt. Cook Post Office, as they are only a five minute drive from our bed and breakfast.  If you arrive at night, it might be a good idea just to let us meet you and show you the way.  Please remember to copy and bring these directions.
